Nurturing the potential of every child and teen.
We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors that makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
14 individuals are diagnosed with cancer each week in Cumberland County. 14 times, 52 weeks in a year means 728 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Cumberland County in 2011 according to Cumberland County, New Jersey Cancer Burden Profile 2010 by the American Cancer Society.
LiveStrong at the Y is a twelve-week, small group program designed for adult cancer survivors. The program will run on Tuesdays and Fridays for one hour a week. This program fulfills the important needs of supporting the period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to attempt to return to their normal life or their "new normal." The program is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that LiveStrong at the Y is about health, not disease.
The Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA's goal is to help participants build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance and improve functional ability. Additional goals include reducing the severity of therapy levels and self esteem. A final goal of the program is to assist participants in developing their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle, not only as part of their recovery, but as a way of life. In addition to the physical benefits, the program provides participants a supportive environment and a feeling of community with their fellow survivors, YMCA staff and members.
